Mail Carriers (City)

Customer Service / Delivery Department of the USPS

City Carriers deliver mail in the more populated areas of our country, unlike their counterparts Rural Carriers who work in the less populated areas, or rural areas of the country.

Mail Carriers enjoy the great outdoors and get a lot of fresh air and exercise. These brave workers perform an essential role in our communities, and are well respected.

The great thing about Mail Carriers is that many of them enjoy it so much, they want to keep doing it for their whole career. They find fulfillment in maintaining professional and effective public relations with their customers and others.

Mail Carriers are hard workers and problem solvers. They are also known for being resilient and overcoming obstacles.

These postal workers deliver and collect mail on foot or by vehicle under varying road and weather conditions in an assigned area.

Mail Carriers are responsible for making sure all packages and mail is delivered to each address within their assigned territory as well as having a general familiarity with postal laws, regulations, products, common procedures, and basic geography of their assigned area.

Mail Carriers receive starting pay of $19.93 per hour, on average, depending on geographical location. This position is eligible for federal benefits and is a full time position.

Mail Carriers (Rural)

Customer Service / Delivery Department of the USPS

Rural Carrier Associates (RCA) deliver mail in less populated areas, unlike their counterparts City Carriers who work in more populated areas, like cities or large towns.

These positions are some of the most lucrative of any entry level job at the post office, ranging from $17.76 to as high as $27.54, depending on location.

Many City and Rural Carriers started out as Rural Carrier Associates, which can be a full time or part time position.

These valued individuals case, deliver, and collect mail along their assigned rural route, often using their own personal vehicle while receiving a gas and mileage allowance.

Many RCA’s choose to remain in this position long-term because of the freedom that comes along with this position.

Mail Handlers

Processing / Distribution Department of the USPS

Mail Handlers handle their responsibilities inside a postal facility and help to keep the mail moving.

These positions have a starting pay ranging from $15.25 to $22.47 per hour depending on location.

These key postal workers load, unload, and move bulk mail and postal items during the preprocess procedures and the postprocess procedures.

This entry-level position is one the requires a lot of physical activity. Applicants must be able to lift 70 lbs and push rolling containers which could potentially weigh up to 1,500 lbs.

This is typically a full time position.

Mail Processors perform a variety of clerk duties required to process mail using automated mail processing equipment or manual methods of sortation and distribution.

It is mandatory that applicants are detail oriented and comfortable working in a fast-paced setting.
